DIABETES LOCALLY

According to the Georgia Department of Human Resources, 700,000 Georgia adults had been diagnosed with diabetes in 2007.  For every two new cases of diagnosed diabetes, there is one undiagnosed case, which means an additional 350,000 Georgians with diabetes!  Undeniably, diabetes is a serious issue in Georgia.

Because of the prevalence of diabetes, Walton Wellness has recently begun a special focus on diabetes.  We surveyed 150 Walton residents at health fairs to determine their risk for diabetes.  Out of the 150 surveyed nearly 50% were at a high risk for developing diabetes.  Walton County is no exception from the rest of our state in the number of diabetes cases diagnosed and undiagnosed.  If you feel that you may be at risk or have related symptoms, please get tested.  Early diagnosis and prevention is the key to living a long, healthy life with diabetes.

Next January, Walton Wellness will hold a community dinner to promote a Diabetes Support Group in Walton County.  A local doctor and nutritionist will present and answer questions at the event.  More details to come but feel free to email questions to waltonwellness@gmail.com.
