Don't Forget to Eat Your Chocolate

Remember the blissful days of childhood ignorance when eating was carefree, about what tasted good, and of course, what mom forced us to choke down before we could eat dessert. The days before we knew about the ugly things to come from eating only what tastes good like: obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and cancer. As a result we have developed an unhealthy love- hate relationship with food. As children our thoughts about food is focused on what we can eat. As adults the opposite becomes true we focus on what we shouldn’t eat and the joy of eating is lost to feelings of guilt and anxiety about food. Listen up my friends IT ENDS TODAY! On behalf of all adults who want to once again experience the joy of eating without guilt, for all who want to admit openly your love for food without shame I declare that from today forth we ask not what food can do to us but what food can do for us. In order to do this we must start anew, redefine our relationship with food and rediscover what food is for, our health.

Children’s Safety an Important Community Health Concern

I often become so focused on illness and disease as matters of community health that I forget safety is an important community health topic, especially the safety of children in the summer. In my last column I made a case for a prevention based approach to health in our community. In that column I focused on prevention of chronic disease in our community. This week I am once again putting prevention in the spotlight, prevention of accidental death and injury to children. The top two killers of children and youth in our country are motor vehicle accidents and drowning. Prevention can play a huge role in avoiding death in both of these unfortunate events.

Be Your Own Best Health Advocate

I recently had an experience that inspired me to write this article.  A member of my family was ill and in the hospital.  Having a close family member in the hospital allowed me the opportunity to witness our healthcare system in action.  My family is no stranger to the topic of healthcare my mother is a Nurse and so is my sister and I am a Health Educator.  We feel competent on the subject of health or so I thought.  I was shocked to discover the wall of hoops and red tape that exists between the patient and the answer to or treatment of their condition.  I could not help but think of the thousands of people who do not have a health or medical background on their side.  If it was this hard for us to get answers or information what must it be like for a lay person in the hospital?

Obesity: An Epidemic We Can Break

For several years obesity has been considered an epidemic in our country.  According to the CDC 34%  of Americans are considered to be overweight 30.5% are obese.  That means over half of our adult population is overweight or obese.  Georgia is ranked 14th in the nation in obesity with 26% of adults being considered obese.  But the most alarming statistic and the one making most headlines is 13% of our children are obese or overweight.  In Georgia we are ranked 12th in the nation of youth obesity with 16.4% of our youth 10-17 years of age being considered obese.  Georgia is ranked 13th highest state of inactivity.

An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure

I was so excited to learn about our county recreation department’s involvement and support of Georgia State Parks Campaign “Get Outdoors” through reading the article in the April 1st addition of the Walton Tribune.  Get out, Get Dirty, Get Fit is the slogan for the campaign focusing on children 4 and older.  Obviously, as a Health Educator and being the coordinator of the Walton Wellness initiative, I was intrigued by this campaign and its underlying purpose of combating childhood obesity.  Promoting our parks as a way to get healthy is a clever idea; however, not a new one.  The wellness industry along with several other groups has promoted prevention through exercise as the path to good health for years.  It is refreshing to see that now our government, who is known for its reactionary based approach to healthcare by mainly funding treatment has now joined the wellness  and healthcare industries in recognizing prevention as the treatment of today.

Home Remedies For Colds

I do not know about you but I am sick of this winter, literally.  Since the first hint of chill in the air someone at my house has been sick.  Fortunately for us we have not contracted the real bad stuff that requires antibiotics we have just had what I and so many others affectionately call "The Crud".  My husband says he wished we had stock in Kleenex.  I long for the days that I do not go to bed at night smelling some type of menthol rub.

Unfortunately, there is no medicine or cure for "The Crud" except waiting and blowing it out.  Gone are the days of free for all antibiotics.  There was a time in our not too distant past that antibiotics were handed to you just about every time you went to see your doctor.

What are your last wishes?

All she heard was "CODE"!  Her shoes squeaked against the tile floor beneath her, as she sprinted down the hallway to room 118.  She pushed open the door with the crash cart she had been dragging behind her.  The regular crowd had already gathered in the room with all the needed supplies to revive the patient.  There in the bed laid a 95 year old woman, her fragile body barely forming a mound beneath the covers.  "Call the family", someone shouts.  She runs to the phone and dials the number.  "It is 3 AM, I hope they answer", she thinks to herself.  A groggy "Hello" is muttered through the line.  As briefly as possible she explains the situation.  "Sir, what do you want done for your mother?"
